Problems with Sex: Premature Ejaculation
by Wolfdave
Ejaculation is the squirting out of semen during sex (sexual climax). There are three main ejaculation problems which are quite common. These being: Premature Ejaculation, Delayed ejaculation and Retrograde ejaculation. The one which 30% of men experience at some time in their life is premature ejaculation or PE. This is when you come too quickly during sexual intercourse. This article focuses on premature ejaculation. You should always seek professional medical advice before taking any medications or using new techniques.
There have been many studies and surveys of this problem. A recent study covering five counties and over 500 couples, discovered that the average time from the start of sexual intercourse to ejaculation was just over 5 minutes. However, many experts suggest that setting a timescale for the duration of sexual intercourse is meaningless. They also agree that the individual and his partner should decide whether they are satisfied and happy with the time it takes for ejaculation, no matter how short or long that period is. Still, less than 2 minutes is a problem for both you and your partner. The normal average is about 7 minutes. Some couples however, claim less than 10 minutes is totally unacceptable. There is probably no point going to see your doctor if you can last 5 minutes, instead practice using distraction as a technique.
Causes of ejaculation problems can vary between individuals and can be complicated by having more than one cause. These can be physical or psychological, or both. If the man had a previous health problem that made an erection difficult, for instance, then anxiety over that condition can lead to premature ejaculation now. PE can be divided into two basic categories: Primary premature ejaculation – This is where a man as always experienced this problem since his first sexual activity. Secondary premature ejaculation – The problem has suddenly become an issue, where he has had a normal sexual experience in the past.
Primary PE psychological factors can be caused by early sexual activity that condition future sexual behaviour. For instance; a teenager may have wanted to ejaculate quickly in his early experiences, so has not to be caught doing it. This can make the habit difficult to break. Traumatic sexual experiences as a teenager can lead to anxiety, which in turn lead to ejaculation problems. These early traumas could be the result of being caught having sex or masturbating, or perhaps a more serious trauma, such as sexual abuse. Sometimes a strict upbringing can contribute to later difficulties. Where sex, may have been considered sinful, or only appropriate after marriage.
Experts have identified no physical cause leading to ‘life long’ primary premature ejaculation. However there may be physical issues that lead to temporary primary premature ejaculation and this should return to normal if the physical causes are treated.
Secondary premature ejaculation factors may include both psychological and physical issues. Psychological factors such has; unresolved problems at home or work for instance. Conflicts, or issues within a sexual relationship. Anxiety; often at the start of a new relationship. Also depression and stress can contribute to this problem. Physical factors can include: Diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostrate disease, hypertension, under-active thyroid gland and drinking more than the recommended safe amounts of alcohol, using recreational drugs.
If you have an ejaculation problem that is leading to poor sexual behaviour for you and your partner, then the next step is to visit your doctor. He will discuss the problem with you and may examine you. He will probably ask questions about your family medical history, and conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, your work and lifestyle. He will most likely ask or examine you for injuries to your pelvic area. Blood and urine samples may be taken to check your hormone and cholesterol levels and an examination of your prostrate gland may be carried out.
Your doctor should be able to offer treatment options for any physical condition causing your premature ejaculation. For psychological issues, he will probably recommend a number of self-help techniques you may wish to try. Successful outcomes are usually achieved if you persevere with these. They may include some or all of the following: Masturbating an hour or two before sexual intercourse, or, having sex a second time, a little later after premature ejaculation. Using a thicker condom to reduce sensation. Using a local anaesthetic spray, on the head of your penis, several minutes before sex. However, this can lead to irritation and inflammation to both the man and his partner. Take a deep breath and relax, to stop the ejaculation reflex. This method becomes more effective, the more you use it. Take a break during sexual intercourse and think boring thoughts, this requires strong will-power to do, in the heat of the moment. Have sex with your partner on top.
You can also learn ‘couples therapy’ whereby couples are shown techniques to help the man break the habit. Probably the two techniques most often practiced are the ‘squeeze technique’ and the ‘stop-go’ technique. They both require a lot of practice, which can be fun. The squeeze technique involves the partner masturbating the man, when he is close to ejaculation, the partner stops masturbating him and squeezes the head of the penis. After 10 to 20 seconds, she lets go and waits a further 30 seconds before masturbating him once more. This is repeated several times before ejaculation is allowed to happen. The stop-go technique is similar, but this time the partner does not squeeze the penis. Eventually the man will become more confident and able to control his ejaculation. Once this is achieved, normal intercourse can be resumed, stopping and starting as required.
Some medications are on the market to delay ejaculation. However, some carry side effects, including nausea, headaches, sleeping problems and in rare cases, suicidal thoughts. You should therefore seek medical supervision and advice before using these treatments.
It is widely believed that this problem has its origins way back to cavemen. Where the ability to quickly impregnate the female, was essential, if the male wanted to enlarge his tribe. The Ejaculation Trainer offers help and advice to overcome premature ejaculation. Find out more HERE
